Ron Paul: Abolish The CIA

By Christiaan van Huyssteen (@cvh23)

From The Ron Paul Institute:

Former congressman Ron Paul (Reuters/Robert Galbraith)

“CIA covert actions across the globe have led to destruction of countries and societies and unprecedented resentment toward the United States.”

“The US not only tortured people in its own custody, however. Last week the European Court of Human Rights found that the US government transferred individuals to secret detention centers in Poland (and likely elsewhere) where they were tortured away from public scrutiny. The government of Poland was ordered to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages to two victims for doing nothing to stop their torture on Polish soil.” ~ Ron Paul

The CIA is a government agency out of control. Scandal after scandal. The American intelligence agencies are spying on dozens of foreign leaders, and millions of their own citizens.

Everyone knows of the ‘enhanced interrogation’ (torture) that takes place in Guantanamo and likely dozens of other underground facilities in the world. This is illegal under international law, and the American Constitution. But they do it anyway. These suspected terrorists are detained indefinitely, and are never charged, and never tried.

It is unacceptable by any measure to indefinitely detain suspects.Innocent until proven guilty, regardless of what the accusations may be, the law is the law, and should be upheld and respected and consistently applied if a free society is to be maintained. There are also persistent reports of torture, such as waterboarding (a form of torture in which water is poured over cloth covering the face and breathing passages of an immobilized captive, causing the individual to experience the sensation of drowning . It is absolutely in the interest of the US to prove these claims untrue since they present a direct contradiction to the values the US was founded on.

“For our own safety, end the CIA!” ~ Ron Paul

“As President, I will close Guantanamo” ~ Barack Obama 2 August 2007

It is no wonder that there is so much (justifiable?) resentment in places like the middle-east towards the US.
